5 signs your sneaker care routine needs an upgrade

Chances are you already have a sneaker care routine. You clean your sneakers, store them reasonably well, and you try your best. But be honest: is your routine still working? Sometimes bad habits slowly creep in. In this blog, you’ll discover five signs that show your sneaker care routine needs an upgrade.

1. Your sneakers don’t stay clean

You clean your sneakers every week, but after a few days they already look dirty again. Stains come back and dirt keeps building up. Without protection, dirt penetrates directly into the material. You’re treating the symptoms, not the cause.

Use REINS crystal protection with the ultrasonic sprayer, which ensures an even distribution of the protective layer. The protection lasts for six months, much longer than most other protector sprays. The benefit: dirt doesn’t soak in and your sneakers become easy to clean. They stay cleaner for longer, and maintenance becomes much simpler.

2. You use the same products for all materials

Every material needs its own type of care. Many sneaker care products are designed for one specific material and can be harmful to another. A product that works for leather might damage suede, and vice versa. That’s why it’s always important to check what materials your products are suitable for.

Unless you use REINS products. All REINS products are water-based and contain no harsh chemicals, so they are safe to use on all materials. Of course, each material still has its own method of application. For example, spraying cleaner directly on suede can still cause stains. But if you spray the cleaner onto a microfiber cloth first and then treat the stain, you won’t leave marks behind.

3. You don’t have a fixed routine

The sign: You clean “when necessary.” No schedule, no consistency.
The problem: “When necessary” usually means “too late.” By then, stains have set and damage is already done.

The upgrade:

  • After every wear: Quick wipe (30 seconds)
  • Weekly: More thorough clean (15 minutes)
  • Monthly: Check collection, reapply protector if needed (30 minutes)
  • Per season: Deep clean and storage rotation (1–2 hours)

Result: Preventive care avoids big problems. Less emergency cleaning.

4. Your tools are worn out or missing

The sign: You use an old toothbrush, a random cloth, or just your hands. No proper tools.
The problem: Wrong tools give poor results and can cause damage. Hard brushes ruin materials, rough cloths cause scratches.

The upgrade:

Result: Better results in less time, with less risk of damage.

5. Your collection ages faster than expected

The sign: Sneakers from just a year ago already look old. Yellowing, discoloration, wear and tear happen too fast.
The problem: Poor storage, no protector, incorrect cleaning, or too little rotation. Small mistakes add up.

The upgrade:

  • Storage: Out of sunlight, dry, in boxes with silica gel
  • Protector: From day one, reapply regularly
  • Rotation: Don’t wear the same pair every day
  • Inspection: Monthly checks, fix small issues early

Result: Sneakers last 2–3 times longer, stay in better condition, and have higher resale value.

The upgrade checklist

How many signs do you recognize?

  • 0–1: Your routine is solid.
  • 2–3: Time for an upgrade. Focus on the biggest issues.
  • 4–5: Complete overhaul needed. Start with the basics.

How to start upgrading

Week 1: Invest in basics
REINS Protector + sprayer, Sneaker Cleaner + microfiber cloth, suede brush if needed.

Week 2: Protect your collection
Spray all sneakers, starting with your most worn pairs.

Week 3: Implement your routine
Quick wipe after wearing, weekly session, monthly reminder.

Week 4: Optimize storage
Out of sunlight, silica gel in boxes, organize for rotation.

Final thoughts: small upgrades, big difference

You don’t have to change everything at once. Start with one or two upgrades that have the biggest impact.

Most impactful:

  • Using protector (prevents 80% of problems)
  • A fixed routine (consistency is key)
  • Proper tools (better results, less time)

Small improvements stack up into huge differences in how long your sneakers last and how good they look.
