Here’s what you can do to protect your suede sneakers

Suede sneakers look premium, feel luxurious, and attract compliments. But let’s be honest: they’re also magnets for stains, water, and stress. One rainstorm without protection? Water stains on your beloved suede kicks. One wrong cleaning attempt? Permanent damage. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right approach, your suede sneakers can stay looking great. Here’s how to keep them clean and well-maintained.

Do this to protect your suede sneakers

  1. Use a protective spray before wearing.
Suede is delicate and absorbs moisture and dirt like a sponge. A protective spray creates an invisible barrier to prevent this. For example, the REINS Starter Kit with ultrasonic atomizer ensures even application. Apply two layers, then avoid rain for the first 72 hours. Reapply every six months. Protection prevents 80% of common suede problems, making it the most important step.
  2. Invest in a suede brush.
A brush designed for suede removes surface dirt, restores the nap, and keeps your suede looking fresh. Brush in one direction, following the nap, in short, gentle strokes after every wear. For stubborn dirt, brush both ways.
  3. Use a suede-safe cleaner for stains.
A sneaker cleaner suitable for suede removes small stains without damaging the material. Work in gentle circular motions, don’t press too hard, and brush to restore the nap afterward. REINS cleaner works for most stains, but paint, tar, and candle wax are harder or impossible to remove.
  4. Store your suede sneakers properly.
Suede is sensitive to moisture, UV light, and dust. Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. Store in a dry place to avoid mold. Use the original box or a fabric bag with silica gel packs. Avoid plastic; suede needs to breathe.
  5. Rotate your suede sneakers.
Suede needs time to recover. Wearing them daily accelerates wear. Avoid wearing the same pair more than two days in a row, and give them at least 24 hours between wears. Let them air out and brush after each use. With proper care, your suede sneakers can last two to three times longer.

Don’t do this with suede sneakers

  1. Don’t use water to clean suede.
Water penetrates the material, disrupts the nap, and leaves stains. It causes water spots, discoloration, stiffness, and permanent texture changes. Use a dry suede brush for daily maintenance and a suede-safe cleaner for stains.
  2. Don’t wear unprotected suede in the rain.
Rain is suede’s biggest enemy. Even with REINS protection, walking in the rain is risky. If your sneakers get wet, blot excess water, stuff them with newspaper, and air-dry. Never use a heater, it can severely damage suede. Always check the weather before wearing suede sneakers.
  3. Don’t use regular shoe polish.
Products for smooth leather clog suede pores and cause lasting damage. Only use products specifically made for suede, like those from REINS.
  4. Don’t wait to remove stains.
The longer a stain sits, the deeper it penetrates. A stain you could remove today may be permanent tomorrow. Blot excess liquid, let the material dry, then clean with REINS cleaner and brush the nap. Clean within 24 hours for best results.
  5. Don’t put suede sneakers in the washing machine.
It may seem like a quick fix, but machine washing ruins suede. Water, movement, and heat damage the texture and color. Even delicate programs can’t prevent this.
